Ph.: cover Photomed Festival 2013Until June 16th France is still attracting Mediterranean region photography aficionados with the “Photomed Festival” in the wonderful southern part of the country, between Sanary-sur-Mer, Bandol and Toulon: Photomed shows that photography does not stop at borders, and perhaps this can enable dialogue between all of these cultures. This year’s edition is also paying homage to Gabriele Basilico, after the Italian photographer’s recent death, in the large show at Toulon’s Hotel des Arts: until June 30th are showcasing some of the photos he took in nine important Mediterranean cities, like Barcelona, Beirut, Genoa, Istanbul, Monaco, Naples, Palermo, Rome and Valenza. He liked photographing cities and the urban landscape with all of its inconsistencies and wanted to show that, despite urban designers, a certain degree of anarchy always exists in cities.

The exhibition includes many other artists like the neorealist photographer Nino Migliori and the Lebanese Fouad Elkoury. Israeli photographer Gali Tibbon observes the faithful as they make their way to Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre with his shots, while Greece can be seen in those by Katerina Kaloudi and Stratis Vogiatzis. Special focus is dedicated to Slovenian and Lebanese photography: Daoud Aoulad-Syade is showing off Bandol’s vineyards, while Patrick Tourneboeuf’s photographs show the French coast from Perpignan to Menton. There are also previously wonderful unseen portraits by the director Costantinos Costa-Gavras (Simon Signoret, Yves Montand, Regis Debray, Jorge Semprun), and the stars of the past, from Brigitte Bardot to Sophia Loren and Liz Taylor, rendered immortal in photos by Bruno Mouron and Pascal Rostain.
